About Clavet: Clavet (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium) works by fighting and eliminating bacteria. It also helps to inhibit beta lactamase enzymes, which helps to overcome antibiotic resistance. This medicine is suitable for use in cats, dogs and certain farm animals, including calves.

How to use Clavet

Clavet (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium) works by fighting and eliminating bacteria. It also helps to inhibit beta lactamase enzymes, which helps to overcome antibiotic resistance. This medicine is suitable for use in cats, dogs and certain farm animals, including calves. Indications include skin infections in dogs and cats (abscesses, cellulitis and pyoderma), canine periodontal infections and urinary tract infections occurring in cats. Susceptible microorganisms include staphylococcus aureus, staphyloccusspp., streptococcus spp and various others.

Amoxicillin is classified as a penicillin antibiotic, and it exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide range of both gram positive and negative bacteria. However, it is unable to resist destruction by beta lactamase (enzymes produced by certain types of bacteria), and it is quickly destroyed by these enzymes. To counter this, clavulanate potassium is added. It inhibits the beta lactamase enzymes, which prevents the destruction of amoxicillin by beta lactamase. This increases the spectrum of antibacterial activity and helps to overcome infections caused by otherwise resistant bacteria.

Clavet Dosage

Clavet (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium) tablets are available as 2 different strength formulations. The weaker formulation contains 200mg of amoxicillin and 50mg of clavulanate potassium (also called clavulanic acid). It is suitable for cats and dogs. In addition to this, a stronger version containing 400mg of amoxicillin and 100mg of clavulanate potassium is available. Generally, dogs and calves are treated with this increased strength version.

In all cases, a veterinarian will need to examine the pet or farm animal requiring treatment so that its condition can be properly diagnosed. Antibiotic treatment will only commence if the symptoms are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible microorganisms. The required daily dosage will be carefully calculated based on the body weight of the infected animal. Antibiotic treatment may be required to continue for 5 to 7 days, however if the infection is more serious, the medicine may need to be taken beyond this. Treatment should not continue for more than 30 days.

Clavet Side Effects

Animals treated with Clavet (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium) tablets may suffer from loose stools, sickness or a poor appetite. Owners who suspect that their animal is unwell or suffering from any side effects should take it to see a veterinarian.

Clavet Precautions

Clavet (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate Potassium) is strictly for veterinary use only. Under no circumstances should it be administered to or taken by human patients.

If the pet or farm animal`s condition shows no signs of improvement, or if its symptoms worsen, a further examination will be required by the veterinarian, and alternative forms of treatment may be recommended.
