About Vetoryl: Vetoryl (Trilostane) is an adrenocortical suppressant prescribed for the treatment of canine Cushing`s syndrome (hyperadrenocorticism). Dogs affected by this condition suffer from hair loss, hypertension, a pot belly, lethargy, panting, and various other symptoms.

How to use Vetoryl

Vetoryl (Trilostane) is a veterinary drug indicated for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism or Cushing`s syndrome, a commonly diagnosed endocrine disorder in dogs, especially older ones. This condition can cause skin diseases, alopecia, lethargy, polyuria, muscular weakness as well as other symptoms. This occurs due to excess amounts of glucocorticoids such as cortisol (a hormone that the adrenal glands produce).

Cushing`s syndrome may be caused by a benign tumor in the pituitary gland (pituitary dependant hyperadrenocorticism, the most common form of the disease, affecting 80% of animals diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism ) or else adrenal dependent hyperadrenocorticism, which is less common and is caused by a tumor in either one or both of the adrenal glands. Treatment with this medicine aims to manage the symptoms, by causing a significant reduction in the serum cortisol concentrations, which in turn may help to reverse the clinical signs of Cushing`s syndrome. However, it will not cure the condition.

Vetoryl Dosage

In addition to a physical examination, blood tests will be required before treatment with Vetoryl (Trilostane) can begin, so that the veterinarian can confirm that the dog`s symptoms are caused by Cushing`s syndrome. Other tests may be needed so as to find out whether it is a pituitary or adrenal gland tumor that is causing the symptoms. The veterinarian will calculate an appropriate dosage based on the weight of the dog and the size of the capsule, and in some cases, vets have prescribed a starting dose ranging from 1mg to 3mg per pound per day. Regular visits to the veterinarian`s clinic will be needed, so that the dog`s response to treatment can be monitored and the dosage adjusted if necessary.

Vetoryl Side Effects
