About Osteofos:
Osteofos (Alendronate Sodium) is a drug used in the treatment of Paget`s disease, osteoporosis and other types of disorders affecting the bones. It works by hindering the breakdown of bones caused by cells called osteoclasts. Belonging to the group of drugs called bisphosphonates this synthetic medicine binds to certain minerals in the bones, known as hydroxylapatite, making the bones stronger thereby preventing breakdowns and fractures.
The structure of the bones in people with healthy bones is maintained by a process in which the osteoclasts break down the old bones and other bone-forming cells – osteoblasts – synthesise new bones. In patients suffering from osteoporosis, the rate at which bones break down is higher than the rate of formation. As such, they become weak and vulnerable to bone breaking. Causes of osteoporosis include menopause and using some forms of medical treatments such as corticosteroids. This medicine can be prescribed for people at risk of osteoporosis or those already suffering from it.
How to use Osteofos
Osteofos (Alendronate Sodium) comes in the form of tablets and should be taken with a lot of water. Do not alter the structure of the tablets either by crushing or dissolving in water. There have been reports, although in rare cases that prolonged use of this medicine cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. It is prudent that you seek medical attention as soon as you notice any allergic reactions such as hives, swelling of the limbs and the face, having trouble swallowing and breathing, and skin rashes among others.
Before you start using this medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under other medicines, suffering from allergies and other medical conditions, or using supplements, herbal products or vitamins.
